Parents Bedroom with Navy Headboard & Mural Wall

A pichwai mural sets the mood behind the bed, so the bed itself stays simple. The navy tufted headboard is the one bold move. Its deep blue holds the wall of soft blush and cream without fighting the artwork. We ran the same navy down into the base, so the whole bed feels like one solid block rather than a headboard perched on a separate frame. A white wardrobe with a loft sits along the side wall, kept plain so it fades next to the mural. Floating bedside tables keep the floor open. The trade-off with a mural wall is that you commit to that art for years.

About Parents Room Interiors

Common questions from homeowners.

The wall behind the bed carries a pichwai-style mural, a traditional Indian scene of peacocks, temple arches and trees in soft blush and cream. It is framed within an arch shape so it stays a picture on the wall rather than spilling across the whole room. This kind of art brings colour and story without needing any extra decor. Because the tones are gentle, it fills the wall without overwhelming a room used for rest.

It is a navy blue tufted headboard, deep-buttoned and carried down into the bed base in the same fabric. The button tufting adds a padded, soft back to lean against and catches light across its dimples. We took the navy into the base so the bed sits as one solid block instead of a panel on a frame. The dark blue is also the one strong colour that can hold its place in front of a busy mural.

The ceiling is a white grid false ceiling with thin maroon lines marking out the panels. The grid gives a plain ceiling some structure and repeats the rust tones from the blind and the mural below. Recessed spotlights sit inside the panels for even light, and a ceiling fan hangs from the centre. Keeping the lines slim stops the ceiling from pulling attention off the mural wall, which is meant to be the star.

The room has two different covers for two jobs. A terracotta roller blind sits on the window by the bed, easy to pull down for a quick blackout and matched to the warm tones in the mural. On the other window, patterned curtains soften the light and add a bit of texture to a plain wall. Using a blind on one and curtains on the other suits how each window is used through the day.

Storage is handled by a white wardrobe with a loft cabinet above, set along the side wall. White was chosen so the wardrobe stays quiet and lets the mural wall lead, since a dark or patterned wardrobe would have split attention. The loft up top takes suitcases and bedding you rarely need. Slim floating bedside tables cover the small daily things by the bed, and being wall hung they keep the floor clear.

A mural wall is easier to live with than to change, so the upkeep is mostly about protecting it. Wipe it only with a dry or barely damp cloth, since heavy scrubbing lifts the print. Keep the bed and pillows from rubbing the lower edge over time. The real catch is commitment, because unlike paint you cannot repaint it in an afternoon, so pick a scene you will still like in five years.

Not in a room lit and balanced like this one. The navy stays on the headboard and base, not the walls, so the space around it stays light with the cream mural and white wardrobe. A dark headboard actually gives a soft, pale room something to settle on. If your room is very small, keep the rest genuinely light, as here, and let the bed be the only deep colour so it grounds rather than shrinks.

Most of this is recreatable without a big spend. The mural is the main cost, and a printed wallpaper version costs far less than hand-painted work while looking much the same from across the room. A plain white wardrobe and simple platform bed are budget-friendly, and the tufted headboard can be ordered in a cheaper fabric than velvet. Spend on the one wall and the headboard, and keep everything around them plain.
