Stairs Area with Family Sculpture and Curved Staircase

A white sculpture stands at the foot of the stairs. Three figures stand together on a round pedestal. It was placed dead centre at the turn of the flight, so it, not the staircase itself, is the first thing you notice walking in. The staircase curves up behind it on turned wood balusters and a wood handrail. Stone treads and a textured stucco wall give the stairwell a hand-finished feel. Potted plants ring the base of the pedestal. Corner shelves hold a ceramic pot on the rough wall. A tall sculpture like this fixes the whole space around one piece, so changing the look later means moving a heavy centrepiece.

About Stairs Area Interiors

Common questions from homeowners.

It is a white sculpture of three figures grouped together, standing on a round pedestal at the foot of the flight. The piece was set at the turn of the staircase on purpose, so it becomes the centrepiece of the whole stairwell rather than a corner ornament. Its pale colour stands out against the darker stone and wood around it. Ringed with potted plants at the base, it works as the focal point of the space.

It is a curved staircase that sweeps up and around rather than climbing in a straight run. The balusters are turned wood, each one shaped on a lathe into the classic spindle profile, and they carry a smooth wood handrail. The treads are stone with a stone-clad side. The curve softens the whole stairwell and gives it a traditional feel that matches the sculpture at its foot.

The main wall carries a textured stucco finish, a hand-troweled plaster with a rough, broken surface rather than a smooth paint. That texture was chosen so a large blank stairwell wall does not sit there flat and empty. It catches light and shadow through the day as the sun moves. Small corner shelves are set into it to hold a ceramic pot or two.

A cluster of potted palms rings the base of the sculpture, in blue-and-white patterned ceramic pots. Greenery was brought in to soften the hard stone and plaster of the stairwell and to fill the floor around the pedestal. Live plants here also make the landing feel used rather than staged. The blue pots pick up the one cool note in an otherwise warm, neutral space.

Daylight comes in through a window set high on the curved wall, above the turn of the flight. Placing it up high was sensible, since a stairwell has little wall free at ground level and the height also lights the sculpture from above. The pale walls bounce that light down into the space. It keeps a tall, enclosed stairwell from feeling dark during the day.

It makes a strong centrepiece, but it does tie the space down. A large sculpture on a fixed pedestal sets the whole look of the stairwell, so redecorating later means working around a heavy piece that is not easy to move. It also needs floor space at the base that then cannot be used for anything else. If you like the idea but want flexibility, a lighter piece on a smaller plinth gives some of the effect with far less commitment.

A textured stucco wall looks great but holds dust in its grooves, so the trade is a little more cleaning than a smooth painted wall. Dust it down with a soft brush now and then rather than a wet cloth, which can leave streaks in the texture. Small chips can be patched and re-troweled by a plasterer to blend in. Kept away from damp, a stucco finish like this lasts for years without a repaint.

A curved staircase needs more floor than a straight one, so in a small home it is the harder choice to fit. The sweep works best where there is room for it to turn without crowding the walls. If space is tight, the same traditional feel comes from turned wood balusters and stone treads on a straight or L-shaped flight instead. Keep the sculpture idea smaller too, since a full-size piece would swamp a compact stairwell.
