A functional study room typically requires 80-120 sq ft, with a desk positioned near a window for natural light and away from the door to minimize distractions. In smaller homes, a 60 sq ft corner with proper ventilation and storage can work well. The layout should allow for a comfortable chair, storage shelves, and at least 2-3 feet of walking space for movement.

A basic study room setup costs ₹40,000-₹80,000 for essential furniture (desk, chair, shelves) and basic finishes. Mid-range designs with quality materials and built-in storage range from ₹1,00,000-₹2,50,000, while premium setups with custom cabinetry and advanced lighting can exceed ₹3,00,000. Costs vary based on city, materials chosen, and whether you opt for modular or custom-built solutions.

Combine natural light from a window with task lighting—a focused desk lamp (ideally 40-60W equivalent LED) positioned to the side to avoid glare on screens. Add ambient lighting with a ceiling fixture or wall sconces at 3000K color temperature for reduced eye strain during long study hours. Avoid placing the desk directly facing or with its back to the window to minimize screen glare.

Opt for calming, neutral wall colors like soft grey, beige, or pale blue to improve focus and reduce mental fatigue—avoid bright reds or dark colors that can be distracting. For flooring, wooden or laminate finishes are practical and easy to maintain, while cork or rubber mats under the desk reduce noise and provide comfort.
