It is hard-wearing and easy to keep clean, though it does stay cooler underfoot than wood, so many people add a rug beside the bed for the mornings.

There is a cream panelled wardrobe with classic round moulding detailing on the shutters, and a separate dressing area with its own unit and pendant light. Keeping the wardrobe cream and close to the wall tone stops the storage from competing with the mural. The panelled shutters match the traditional feel of the bed, so the joinery looks like part of the scheme rather than a plain modern box.

It can, with some restraint. The arched mural is the key idea and can be scaled to fit a shorter wall, or done as a smaller painted panel rather than a full arch. A lighter bed frame without the tall posts would suit a lower ceiling. The main thing is to keep the palette pale, since the soft beige and cream are what let a classic, detailed room still feel open and airy.

Gently is the rule. A painted mural should only be dusted with a dry soft cloth, never scrubbed or wiped with water, since that can lift the paint. Kept away from direct water and harsh cleaning, it lasts for years. The trade-off is that it is not easy to change, so if you later want a different colour scheme, you plan the rest of the room around the mural rather than replacing it.
