Parents Room with Tufted Headboard and Lit Panel
About Parents Room Interiors
Common questions from homeowners.
It is a wide upholstered headboard in soft white, worked in a diamond tufting pattern with buttoned points. The buttons give the flat white some shadow and depth so it does not look like a blank board. We ran it nearly the full width of the bed to make the sleeping wall feel settled and generous. White was chosen to keep an older couple's room quiet, since the pattern alone gives it enough to look at.
A light blue textured panel sits inside a recess above the headboard, and we lined the edge of that recess with hidden light. At night the panel glows softly on its own, which gives the room a gentle background light without switching on anything bright. It works well for a couple who read at different times. The colour reads calm and cool, so the glow stays restful rather than turning the room a strong shade.
Two grey wall sconces are fixed on either side of the headboard at reading height. Putting them on the wall instead of on tables frees up the bedside surface and stops a lamp from being knocked over in the dark. Each throws light up and down the wall, which is enough to read by without waking the other person. The cove glow behind the panel handles the soft background light so these can stay focused.
It is a tall white gloss wardrobe with two doors and slim gold handles, set on the wall to the side of the bed. Gloss white keeps a calm room feeling light and reflects what daylight the room gets. The full height gives plenty of hanging and shelf space for a couple. The trade with a plain gloss front is that it shows the odd fingerprint near the handles, so a quick wipe keeps it looking clean.
The TV mounts on a white fluted panel that runs the height of the wall, sitting over a floating console raised on slim gold legs. The vertical grooves of the fluting add a quiet texture so the wall is not just a flat backdrop for the screen. Lifting the console on legs keeps the floor visible and the room feeling airy. A small plant and a book or two are all it needs to stay uncluttered.
A split AC sits high on the wall and a ceiling fan hangs below the false ceiling, so the couple can pick whichever suits the day. The fan alone is enough on milder nights, with the AC for the peak of summer. Recessed downlights in the ceiling give the everyday light. Between the sconces, the cove glow and the downlights, the room has a soft setting and a bright one without any single harsh overhead beam.
It can, with a couple of tweaks. A tufted headboard scales down to any bed width and still gives the same soft, settled look on the main wall. The lit recess above it can shrink to a slim panel or be dropped for a painted feature if the ceiling is low. Wall sconces are especially good in a small room since they save the bedside tables. You would size the wardrobe last, as it takes the most wall.
The gloss wardrobe and console wipe clean easily, though they show marks more than a matte surface. The tufted headboard is the piece to keep an eye on, because dust settles into the buttoned seams and needs an occasional brush or vacuum with a soft head. The fluted panel collects a little dust in its grooves too. None of it is hard work, and the cost mostly follows the upholstery and the fitted wardrobe you choose.
